DIY maxi tent dress! ✂

I like to keep my style simple during summer time, less is more, and a stylish maxi skirt sure does the job when you want to dress casual and comfy.  I found this fabric in a thrift store a while ago and I immediately knew it would be perfect for a long dress.  Now that the warm days and summer festivals are here, it was the perfect timing to design this awesome tent dress.  New to sewing?  Check out my 101 guide to sewing first, it will give your the basics to use your sewing machine.  This tutorial is for beginners to intermediate DIYers, please don’t be discouraged, it took me 1 hour to do it, very fast and soooo stylish!  So go find some cool jersey fabric at the store and make your own summer style!

Material needed:

  • 62″  x 56″ fabric or more if you are tall, jersey is the best because it won’t fray, that means you don’t have to finish the edges.  If you are a bit lazy like me, that will make you HAPPY! :)
  • Scissors, thread and sewing machine
  • A yard stick
  • Fabric chalk or soap
  • *** AND:  the trick to this tutorial is that you start your pattern from a tank top you have at home.  I suggest you choose a loose tank top (but not to big either) that you think the fit will do well for the top of your dress.  You can also check out my DIY a-frame tank top which uses the same technique!

Ari’s tips:  Don’t forget to wash your fabric (pre-shrink) before you start your work!  Check out the measurements I wrote for the dress (bellow), this is for a size SM dress.  Add a couple of inches to the sides and length to fit your silhouette! :)  Enjoy guys!  Oh and a big thank you to The Babalooneys, an awesome retro-surf-pop band from my city, Québec, for sharing their music in this video!
