Engine Heart : Motorcycle Love

This summer I found a new thrilling obsession.  Motorcycles.  After a receiving a vintage Yamaha SR185 for my birthday from my generous boyfriend, I was nervous to ride it.  Not only did I have a bad history with motorcycles which left me with a huge scar, but I also did not know how to drive a stick shift, so I was learning A LOT – all at once.  Well, there’s a first time for everything and you only live once!
After purchasing a helmet and practicing in empty parking lots and around the block, my girlfriends gave me a sudden boost of confidence by taking me on my first ride on the big streets of Portandia. I felt safe with someone leading the way and another behind me (wow, I have awesome friends).  We traveled  up and down hills, stopped for smoothies, rode through windy roads with lush green forrest and jumped in lakes.  There’s a feeling a can’t explain when you hear the loud engine beneath you, the wind in your hair, and speed. It’s something I’ve never felt with any motor vehicle and is both audacious feeling, yet quite relaxing – the perfect remedy to get your mind of anything.

Enjoying the ride is half the fun.  Another huge part of having a motorcycle is making it yours.  Luckily I have a very handy boyfriend who is also passionate about motorbikes. He stripped off all the stock parts and added customized it to my liking.  Picking out tanks, tires, handlebars, lights the list can go on forever and when you have a bike you always want to add something or change it.  I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to understand why boys are always in their man caves. It’s an addiction that has become my new creative outlet.

Here are a few photos that make me want to ride and hopefully get more girls to get a motorcycle of their own. If I can do it, anyone can.

Eva and Kari took me on my first ride!
